Laughlin, Nevada is known as Unvegas

Remember the story of the Solution Americans selling Manhattan for some trinkets? The one-time owners of a small eight-room hôtel on the banks of the Colorado Visser must have had the same sinking intuition.

Not that these hôtel owners were short-changed by visionary Don Laughlin — it’s just that now, échec decades later, Laughlin is touting a $235,000 investment in a big-time resort emprise that has so far attracted eight more casino/hotels in his modest sprawl. . In Colorado, meanwhile, Laughlin has plowed millions of casino butins back into community projects like bridges in Arizona and an airport propre of landing 737s.

Can people be blamed if they even name the city after him?

Laughlin had made a few bucks selling a gambling discothèque in Las Vegas and, flying over what is now Laughlin, Nevada, the soon-to-be resort magnate looked down and saw a stretch of accrocher nestled between two rugged mountains. The accrocher is the dividing line between Nevada and Arizona, and California is only a few miles up the road.

“If we build it, they will come.” Not for Don Laughlin, but no doubt his feelings when he looked into his unusually reliable crystal ball and foresaw another Las Vegas development embout an hour’s drive south of reality. In 1966 he opened the Riverside Casino with 12 slot machines and two gaming tables. There were only échec rooms to use as séjour quarters parce que the Laughlin family lived in the other échec rooms.

Fast forward to a riverside casino that has grown over the years to more than 1,400 rooms including two towers, several casinos and plenty of extras to make it a gâtée among Laughlin visitors. Many other familiar names now stake claim along the Colorado, including the Flamingo, Golden Nugget and Harrah. There are now 10,000 rooms and 60 restaurants serving more than 5 million visitors to Laughlin each year.

Why people come to Laughlin is best explained when you allure at the town’s visitor foule. For starters, they’re a bit older—embout two-thirds of them are 50 or older, and embout a third are 65 or older. They spend an average of $33 a night to stay in Laughlin, but they’ll comptabilité more than $400 for gambling during their two- or three-day stay in town.

In pantalon, people who come to Laughlin would rather spend money on gambling than fancy hotel rooms, and chances are they’re a little more wary of the traffic and stationnement problems they might devanture in Las Vegas. As one hotel mercatique person told us, Laughlin is really thought of by many visitors as Old Las Vegas — one that was more focused on offering cheap beds and cheap food, but plenty of gambling opportunities. Another élocution we hear is “un-Vegas” which exultation visitors to a simpler time and terrain that’s easier on the pocketbook.

Judging from our recent visit to Laughlin, despite more competition these days from Indian casinos that have taken away some California visitors who might now be réjoui to stay and gamble at a casino closer to appartement, the chambre still seems to work. But Laughlin still draws them very well from parts of California and many parages around the folk, including destinations in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Three different airlines now offer chargeur corvée to Laughlin from dozens of destinations.

The weather was great during our November visit — mid-70s, sunny, cloudless skies. In fact, winter is the best time to visit Laughlin as locals will tell you that summer can be 10 degrees hotter than already toasty Las Vegas.

With consistently warm weather, Laughlin: Another factor at work on the accrocher. We read somewhere that this is the only fragment of Nevada that has this much water to play in, and judging from the many ski-doo and speed boats in Colorado, we wouldn’t be surprised. The hotels showcase the accrocher as much as they showcase some of the big-name entertainers—almost all have boat docks and shuttle boats for guests to motocross the accrocher, and cruises on starwheel replicas and even high-speed riverboats.

Actually, Loughlin’s accrocher walk isn’t the same as New Orleans’ accrocher walk – the Colorado at this bend is quite a bit narrower than the Mississippi, but the cérémonie’s incursion, with restaurants and shops along the way, can be just as entertaining. And, of circuit, Laughlin has nombreux casinos while New Orleans’ riverfront area has one.

Laughlin doesn’t really have Las Vegas-quality entertainment. The city receives high-quality and current acts, including many of the top folk music entertainers on the charts today But you will likely see someone who has already reached the top, perhaps several years ago. While we were there, current and upcoming attractions included names like Vicky Lawrence, Charo, Mel Tillis, Roy Clark, and a special “Where Are They Now” spectacle at Edgewater featuring many instaurer child stars like Paul Peterson (The Donna Reed Spectacle) . and Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell Leave it to Beaver).

On the encore side, entertainment in Laughlin is relatively cheap. If you’ve been to Las Vegas and passed up parce que the entertainment was too expensive, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at Laughlin. Instead of $100 or $150 a reçu, name acts can cost as little as $25 for a seat.

Most of the big-name entertainment comes to Riverside, which was our séance of operations while in Laughlin. We couldn’t help but realize that Don Laughlin had trained his stuc to foyer on customer corvée with a little dynamite sign in our guest room saying “The customer is always king”. Throughout the Riverside complex there are special indications that Riverside is a work in progress. There’s a 34-lane quilles alley and mitoyen Kids’ Castle that lets you drop your kids off for $6.50 an hour. A “Perdant’s Lounge” has pictures of famous losers on the walls. There is a great démodé car museum. Oh, and of circuit don’t elle-même Watch Man, a terrain where you’ll find thousands of watches with thousands of designs, including several with Jesus Christ on the dial. Riverside has something for everyone.

There doesn’t seem to be much sin in this reprise of Sin City – no one gives out advertising pamphlets, no over-the-top billboards or signs, no real foyer on girl shows aside from a “showgirls” review at one of the hotels. You get the intuition that many viewers here may be some of the voters concerned embout mentalité values, and one assumes that whatever happens in Laughlin won’t stay in Laughlin.

This was reinforced by our bénéfice encounter with some dear relatives from Hemet, California, who were visiting Laughlin at the same time as us and were in Riverside. We know them as church-going, God-fearing people, and they were in town for échec days for what they thought was good, clean fun.

Somehow, we think that’s exactly what Don Laughlin had in mind when he first hideux eyes on that little eight-room hôtel on the banks of the Colorado Visser.
