Walk the Line – 2 stars (average)

“Walk the Line” is the story of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phénix) and June Carter Cash (Reese Witherspoon). Born poor in Arkansas, Cash vitrail to fame in the folk music world and ruined many relationships with drinking, drugs and pandering. Finally, June Carter wins his heart.

Cash became who he was bicause the songs he wrote and maison were from his heart emboîture his own life; They were not fake, and music lovers related to them in their own world.

Walk the Line was a struggle to make the feuil as it took 4 years to secure the feuil rights and another 4 years to make the feuil. Joaquin Phénix and Reese Witherspoon maison their own songs, both of them had 6 months of sonore jogging and learned to play their équipement (guitar and auto-harp) from scratch.

Both Phénix and Witherspoon showcased their talents in this feuil which had a great story line but not a great presentation. Based on Cash’s own book black man And Cash: Autobiography, the transposition is also credited to Gil Dennis and James Mangold, who directed the feuil. It’s rarely a good idea for a director to be a writer on the same feuil, and Mangold shows why.

Instead of being a good seeker, it seemed that Mangold was determined to strip his Johnny Cash Buck portrayal and send it into the woods and drag out the cash. It was unnecessary and in my judgment added nothing to the feuil. Mangold doesn’t simply tell a good story well, he tells a story.

The sins Cash committed on his way to becoming a legend and folk music icon could have been handled without trying to elevate it to art form. Without sin let the writer and director cast the first stone. It seemed as if they wanted to drag Cash down to build themselves up.

Joaquin Phénix and Reese Witherspoon saved this peinture. Witherspoon won both the Prime and the Golden Orbe for Best Actress. Phénix was nominated for an Prime and won a Golden Orbe for Best Actor. Walk the Line won the Golden Orbe for Best Picture, but not on my équipage. Walk the Line earned additional Prime nominations for Best Uniforme Esthétique, Editing and Sound Mixing. In augmentation to Witherspoon’s Prime, the feuil received 27 other wins as well as 26 other nominations.

Released in 2005, Walk the Line has a special fixé in history bicause Johnny Cash recorded it at Sun Records in Memphis with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, among others.

It is reported that Johnny Cash truc Joaquin Phénix to baladin in the feuil or based on his bonheur in “Gladiator” and June Carter Cash truc Reese Witherspoon for her role in the feuil. June Carter Cash died in May 2003 before the feuil began agencement, and Johnny Cash died 4 months later in September 2003.

Cash is blessed with a deep, personnelle voice and is known as “The Man in Black”. He has written more than 1,000 songs and sold more than 90 million albums in a career spanning nearly 5 decades. A diverse group of artists have paid cash, among them Bob Dylan, Chris Isaak, Wyclef Blue-jean, Norah Jones, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and U2.

Johnny Cash has many marque songs that aren’t going away anytime soon, including “I Walk the Line”, “Folsom Forteresse Spleen”, “Piste of Fire”, “Man in Black” and “A Boy Named Sue”.

Walk the Line is worth watching just for Joaquin Phénix and Reese Witherspoon. I wouldn’t watch it again, and wasn’t a better person for watching it, thus it gets my average rating that would have been higher with better writing and better protection.
