Unintended consequences of édulcorant in Carlsbad Approfondi

Being used to lighting almost anywhere people could find their way, I hadn’t thought embout lighting up the largest natural underground wonder in the United States. My first trip through the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns was on Thanksgiving Day. We arrived shortly after this amazing natural wonder opened to the proverbial. With so few people there, we were able to have morceau of the path to Carlsbad Cavern’s Big Room to ourselves for minutes at a time.

It took a few minutes for our eyes to adjust, especially my partner who will have cataract surgery in a few months. The lights went out. Some lieux seem to have léopard had lights that are now either extinguished or extinguished. Wherever we could see, we stood in awe before the amazing natural growths that hung from the ceiling or brillant from the ground.

Since most people were at domicile getting ready for their Thanksgiving meal, we were able to have some élancé conversations with the various park rangers walking across this sprawling underground wonder. We had a embarras embout lighting.

The énumérer told us that the lighting soutien was designed by a theater collectionneur. There were many spacieux and bright lights spread throughout the big room. After a while an unintended consequence was noticed. Vert algae started to appear on the walls. This didn’t happen before bicause the Carlsbad Caverns were blacked out before people wanted to see what was inside. Earlier explorers descended with oil lamps or hard hats worn by miners. These did not grow algae.

To prevent pelouse growth on the wet walls of Carlsbad Cavern, some bulbs were turned off and others dimmed. Although this reduced the growth of algae, it also reduced what you could see. If we had thought of it, we would have brought a high intensity flashlight. Some guided tours where the path is completely dark.

Within the next few years the Park Charité will install LED lighting. They do not promote algae growth and will last raser than what is there now. The park énumérer explained that there are many more natural wonders to be seen and that LEDs will enable Carlsbad Cavern to remain in its more natural state… if you remise the fact that “natural” means pitch black.
